Referees nearly beaten by irate fans after NSL match in Kajiado [VIDEO]

Referees who officiated the National Super League (NSL) match involving Mathare United and Kajiado FC escaped a beating from angry fans at Ildamat Stadium in Kajiado on Sunday.

Mathare United claimed a 2-1 victory to maintain their lead at the top of the table but supporters of the home team were seemingly not impressed by the officiating.

As the players and match officials walked off the pitch at the final whistle, fans poured into the turf and descended on the officials with kicks and blows before police came to their rescue.

The law enforcers had to fire in the air to disperse the crowd while whisking away the referees.

Mathare United won the game courtesy of goals from Steve Kimari and Pascal Ogweno with Elvis Shamala netting what turned out to be the consolation for the hosts.

It was the sixth straight win for Leonard Odipo’s men which left them at the top of the table with 25 points, five ahead of second-placed Mara Sugar.

The incident adds onto a recent spate of violence directed at match officials in Kenyan football.

Just over a week ago, Gor Mahia fans descended on match officials after their team’s barren draw with Murang’a Seal, leading to chaos at Kasarani Stadium that resulted in damage of property.

The same day, referees escaped the wrath of AFC Leopards supporters who nearly beat them at the conclusion of Ingwe’s 1-1 draw with Posta Rangers at the Ulinzi Complex.

Gor Mahia have since been charged by FKF, who handed them a Ksh500,000 fine and ordered them to play their next five home matches without fans, while the club was also slapped with a Ksh2 million bill by Sports Kenya for the property damage at Kasarani.

It remains to be seen if Kajiado FC will be punished for the latest incident of hooliganism.
