Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola referenced Manchester United’s embarrassing 7-0 defeat to Liverpool while forecasting what he expects from the Manchester derby.

Manchester derby in the offing

Guardiola's side host their crosstown rivals Manchester United at the Etihad on Sunday evening, and will have to vanquish the Red Devils to keep pace with league leaders Liverpool, who beat Nottingham Forest on Saturday thanks to a late Darwin Nunez winner.

Manchester City are currently flying, while United’s resurgence faced a setback with the defeat to Fulham last week.

The loss to the cottagers saw dark clouds gather over the Red Devils once more, prompting predictions of a romping at the hands of Manchester City, but Guardiola believes otherwise.

What Guardiola said

The Spaniard believes the suggestions that his team are overwhelming are far from reality, as Manchester United are still one of the biggest teams in the world, and will play with pride.

He reminded reporters of last season when similar doom was forecast against Manchester United in the clash against Liverpool following the 7-0 defeat. Manchester United, however, earned a draw, and Pep Guardiola submitted that as evidence for the Red Devil's ability to go against the odds.

“Do you remember what happened when United went to Anfield? Last season, 7-0,” he started, per Fabrizio Romano

“Do you remember the comments? ‘How many goals are they going to score? It will be easy for Liverpool’. Result: Liverpool didn’t win. United is United. It’s Man United.”
