Why is Messi getting a rest?

The Albiceleste skipper appeared to sustain a hamstring issue in the 1-0 win over Chile that sealed qualification to the quarter-final, even if he played the game’s entirety.

Messi could not provide clarity regarding his health after Lionel Scaloni notched two consecutive group-stage victories, thus failing to allay growing fears.

“I felt some discomfort in my right hamstring at the beginning of the game,” said Argentina’s captain after success over Chile.

“It was tight. It wasn’t as loose as it should’ve been. But I was able to finish the game. We’ll see how it goes.”

According to ESPN, Messi will not play any part in the defending champions final Group A match in Miami, giving their captain much-needed rest.

The Argentina captain was not pictured in training on Thursday, pointing to his non-appearance in their imminent fixture at the finals.

Scaloni was always expected to ring the changes, due to the continental and world champions already securing their place in the first knockout round.

What comes next?

While Messi may miss the concluding match in Group A, it remains to be seen how the captain’s health will hold up for the remainder of the tournament as Argentina seek to hold on to the crown they secured in 2021.
