Reprieve For Team Nigeria Ahead of World Relays After Being Denied Entry by Chinese Embassy
Team Nigeria has finally found reprieve ahead of the 2025 World Athletics Relays Championship in China.
Previous reports had indicated that the Nigeria was poised to miss this year's edition, having been denied visas by the Chinese Embassy for the global showpiece scheduled for May 10–11.
However, latest reports now indicate that the team has finally been granted access ahead of the competition.
Team Nigeria Faces Tight Schedule
According to Track and Field Gazette, Team Nigeria has finally secured visas for the 2025 World Relays and will depart on Friday.
After a gruelling 24-hour journey, the athletes are expected to compete just two hours after landing.
The team includes world 100m hurdles record holder Tobi Amusan and American collegiate sprint sensation Favour Ashe.
The men's 4x100m team is stacked with sprint talent such as Alaba Akintola, Karlington Anunagba, and the dynamic duo of Ashe and Udodi Onwuzurike, among others.
Building on Past Success
Nigeria will be looking to replicate their 2024 success in the Bahamas, where Nigeria’s mixed 4x400m relay team made history by breaking the African Record with a national record time of 3:12.87.
Their 4th-place finish in the final secured Nigeria a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics and demonstrated the growing strength of their relay teams on the world stage.
The 2025 World Relays in China act as a gateway to the World Championships in Tokyo in September.
