Rwanda’s coach quits via Instagram after failing to qualify for AFCON 2023

Rwanda’s Amavubi head coach Carlos Alos Ferrer has announced his resignation after failing to guide the team to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Spaniard has been under immense pressure since the Amavubi were eliminated from the race in Group L following a surprise 2-0 loss at home to Mozambique in June.

Things worsened when for the coach when now-former Rwanda FA boss Olivier Nizeyimana resigned in April, citing work overload due to his other personal responsibilities.

But it was believed that Nizeyimana was forced out after Rwanda shamefully lost a point that they had picked against Benin in Kigali for fielding the ineligible player Kevin Muhire.

The result left coach Ferrer with a huge task to beat Mozambique and Senegal.

“We came to compete in the qualifying matches of AFCON 2023, and now it's time to start a new project for the new members of the federation, and also for me, it's time to start new Projects,” Ferrer posted.

“I want to wish FERWAFA (Amavubi) the very best for the future- the new members of the board, the players, the staff and the supporters,” the message reads further.

Rwanda FA is now under the leadership of President Alphonse Munyantwali, who appointed his new secretary general Adolphe Kalisa on Monday.

Rwanda will honour their last group qualifier against Senegal in Dakar on September 9th.
