Portuguese media outlets are reporting the death of legendary national team defender and FC Porto general director, Jorge Costa.
The former center-back, who earned 50 caps for Portugal and played alongside stars like LuÃs Figo, Rui Costa, and Nuno Gomes, died from a heart attack at age 53 at São João Hospital in Porto.
Costa suddenly fell ill, and while Porto's medical team provided immediate assistance, including using a defibrillator, followed by the arrival of paramedics, the former footballer and general director could not be saved.
He had been a guest on Sport TV and began feeling unwell around 12:30 p.m. He was immediately admitted to intensive care, but doctors were unable to revive him.
Costa had previously suffered a heart attack in 2022, from which he recovered and continued his work as general director.
One of his last acts was the unexpected signing of Luuk de Jong from PSV, a transfer kept completely under wraps until the player appeared before fans in a Porto jersey during a friendly match.
