Super Eagles-eligible star Akpom's first goal fires Ajax to first win in 10 matches and out of relegation
Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam are out of the danger zone in the Eredivisie thanks to England-born Nigerian forward Chuba Akpom.
Akpom played a pivotal role as Ajax ended an incredible run of 10 matches without a win after a 2-0 win over FC Volendam on Thursday night.
Akpom off the mark for Ajax
The Dutch giants with a storied history found themselves in a slump, struggling to secure victories in their previous encounters in the Dutch league.
A run of 10 matches, with eight defeats, led to the sacking of Maurice Steijn as the club manager with John van’t Schip taking over on an interim basis.
In his first match as Ajax manager, the club’s fortunes took a positive turn with Akpom exceptional for the club.
The 28-year-old was a super-sub as he came off the pitch to wrap up the win after Steven Bergwijn gave Ajax the lead just before the hour mark.
Akpom could have added to the tally, which was his first of the season and for the club, but he hit the post twice in just 11 minutes on the pitch.
The Nigerian striker, known for his scoring ability, proved to be the game-changer as Ajax looked rejuvenated. His goal not only helped end the shocking winless streak but could prove a huge turning point in the season for Ajax and their fans.
