Tara Moore Banned from Tennis for Four Years for Doping
Just a day after Croatian player Lauro Milanović received a draconian punishment, Tara Moore has met the same fate, despite being cleared of charges by an independent tribunal 18 months ago.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) delivered the verdict, following an appeal by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) against the previous acquittal.
Moore's four-year suspension is effective immediately, but will be reduced by 19 months, the time she was provisionally suspended from tennis when the case began.
Timeline of Moore's Doping Case
Moore was provisionally suspended from tennis in May 2022 after testing positive for nandrolone and boldenone. However, in December of the following year, an independent tribunal cleared her, attributing the positive test to contaminated meat.
Following the new ruling, the British player is banned from tennis until early 2028.
After reviewing the scientific and legal evidence, the majority of the CAS panel felt that the player had failed to prove that the concentration of nandrolone in her sample was consistent with the ingestion of contaminated meat. The panel concluded that Ms. Mur failed to establish that the anti-doping rule violation was not intentional. The ITIA’s appeal is therefore upheld, and the decision rendered by the independent tribunal is set aside. (Court of Arbitration for Sport)
Recently, some of the world's top tennis players, such as this year's Wimbledon champions, Jannik Sinner and Iga ÅšwiÄ…tek, have found themselves at the center of doping scandals, resulting in suspensions, though none as lengthy as Moore's.
