Team Nigeria arrives Egypt for 2025 World Karate Championship with high hopes
Team Nigeria has officially landed in Cairo, Egypt, ahead of the 2025 World Karate Championship scheduled to run from November 27 to 30.
The contingent departed Nigeria on Monday, full of optimism and national pride as they prepared to compete against the world’s elite karatekas.
The prestigious global event, held at the heart of the Egyptian capital, will see Nigeria field five outstanding athletes who have distinguished themselves through dedication, discipline, and consistent top-tier performance.
Nigeria fields 5 elite fighters
The athletes representing the country include: Loveth Ngozi Okoro – Kumite -50kg, Godfirst Orie Ukoha-Sampson – Kumite -55kg, Constance Tamunodiepreye Abode – Kumite -61kg, Ujunwa Caroline Nwankwo – Kumite +68kg, and Oluwaseun Olorunbe – Male Kata.
The squad is under the guidance of Coach Efezino Akpotu, while Olusegun Abode serves as the head of delegation.
Female Karatekas set to shine in Cairo
Four of Nigeria’s female stars, Ngozi, Godfirst, Constance, and Ujunwa, are particularly tipped for strong performances.
They have been regular standouts at the annual Zainab Saleh International Female Open Karate Championship, a competition that has significantly boosted women’s karate in the country.
The tournament, spearheaded by Hajiya Zainab Saleh, a board member of the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN), has produced several rising talents and strengthened Nigeria’s global reputation in women’s karate.
KFN Seeks Government Support as Team Competes Abroad
While expressing confidence in Team Nigeria’s chances, the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN) has appealed to the National Sports Commission (NSC) for financial assistance to settle outstanding expenses incurred in ensuring the team’s participation.
The Federation emphasised that the World Championship falls within the mandate of the NSC and urged the commission to step in as the competition unfolds in Cairo.
With preparations complete and spirits high, Team Nigeria is expected to put up a strong showing on the world stage. The nation awaits their performance with hope and pride as the championship kicks off in Egypt.
