The retired Banyana Banyana star described the experience as one of the most traumatic moments of her international career.

Modise blasts Nigeria’s treatment

Speaking about the incident, Modise painted a disturbing picture of what transpired when South Africa travelled to Nigeria for an AFCON qualifying double-header.

According to her, the entire Banyana Banyana squad fell ill after eating food provided by the hosts. “They gave us food poisoning in Nigeria. The whole team was sick, it was only three of us that were not in the hospital,” she revealed.

Despite their health struggles, Modise claimed the team was forced to proceed with the match, as the Nigerian hosts refused to reschedule the fixture. “We thought we were not going to come back,” she added, explaining how only 10 players were fit enough to take to the pitch.

A damning reflection on Nigeria's Past

The shocking accusation adds another layer to the long-standing rivalry between Nigeria and South Africa in women’s football.

Modise’s recollection raises serious concerns about player safety and sportsmanship, especially given Nigeria’s Super Eagles struggles on their trip to Libya for a recent AFCON qualifier.

It also raises questions about whether proper protocols were followed and whether governing bodies failed to intervene at the time.

Modise’s comments are a stark reminder of the off-field challenges athletes can face while representing their countries on the international stage.
