Anyango, a student at St. Noa Girls Secondary School, suffered a severe knee injury during the recent USSSA Ball Games held in Mukono. It is reported that she tore her patella tendon while competing in the schools' championship.

The promising young athlete passed away while undergoing surgery to repair the injury.

In a voice recording, the St. Noa coach confirmed the devastating news. "On a sad note, our very own Happy Maxine Anyango Modesty has left us. She has gone to be with the Lord. She has struggled and she has rested. May her soul rest in peace," the coach stated as quoted by Sports Nation Uganda.

Modesty Anyango's Career Was Off to a Great Start

Anyango was widely regarded as one of Uganda's brightest basketball prospects, having already represented her country at the youth level with the Junior Gazelles national team.

Her immense talent was on full display when she was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the 2024 FIBA Zone V U18 Women’s Qualifiers in Lugogo.

Her pivotal role in that tournament helped Uganda secure a spot in the continental finals, where she later guided the Junior Gazelles to a fourth-place finish in South Africa.

Anyango's exceptional performances also caught the eye of senior national team coach Nicholas Natuhereza, who called her up last year for the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Zone V Qualifiers in Egypt.
