Government officials have revealed ambitious plans to pursue a bid for the global tournament, signalling a major step in the nation's long-term sports strategy.

The revelation was made by Dr Kedrace Turyagyenda, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Sports, during a session with Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

While the committee was initially reviewing the Auditor General's report from December 2025, the discussion expanded to cover the country's infrastructure development and future sporting goals.

Dr. Turyagyenda stressed that current stadium construction and renovation projects are being strategically planned to meet rigorous international standards.

She explained that the government is focused on developing multiple high-capacity venues, with some designed to hold over 45,000 spectators, a key requirement for hosting major international events.

"So that eventually, we should bid for it," Dr. Turyagyenda told the committee as quoted by The Nation. "If we are given a World Cup, then we have stadia to run. The next bid is in 2031 for the World Cup, and I think we are already thinking about it because we are now going to have at least three stadia that we think can be looked at."
