[Watch] Google honours Cristiano Ronaldo as most searched athlete in history
25 years after launching, the biggest search engine on the web, Google, celebrated its Silver Jubilee by posting a video showing the highest searches for select queries, and Cristiano Ronaldo sits above every sports star.
The 38-year-old Al-Nassr forward is arguably the most recognisable athlete in the world, and it is evident in his Instagram following. Ronaldo currently has 615 million followers on the platform, the most by a considerable distance.
Ronaldo named most popular athlete by Google
In a video posted a few days ago by the search engine, Cristiano is the most searched athlete, and consequently footballer, in the 25-year history of Google.
Ronaldo is one of the greatest footballers of all time and is regularly pitted against Lionel Messi in GOAT conversations. Although the Argentine edges him sportingly, given his Ballon d’Or count and World Cup trophy, Ronaldo is seemingly the bigger brand, and Google’s ‘YearInSearch’ is another exhibit.
As the Portuguese’ does with each major achievement, he shared the news of the accolade with his large social media following on multiple platforms, with the caption “Grateful to be honoured as the most searched athlete in @google history.”
