The defending champions showed composure and tactical maturity, breaking down a resilient Mathare side with Shariff Musa opening the scoring shortly after the restart before Bryson Wangai sealed the win deep into stoppage time.

The result now means Gor Mahia have collected 12 points from a possible 15, having lost their opening game to Bidco United at the same venue.

We Are Doing Well

Reflecting on the result, Akonnor praised his players’ consistency and adaptability, emphasizing that Gor Mahia’s success is a result of shared learning and belief within the team.

“The boys are doing well. They’re processing exactly what we’re asking of them, and they believe in themselves,” Akonnor said after the match.

“We’re all growing together — as coaches, as players, as a team. Every game is a chance to learn and improve, and the players have really embraced that. They trust the process, and it’s showing on the pitch.”

Patience Was Key in Mathare Win

The Ghanaian tactician highlighted how tactical patience played a key role in breaking down Mathare United’s structure, especially after a cagey first half that ended goalless.

“We knew Mathare like to keep the ball and play patiently, so we had to be disciplined and wait for our moments,” he explained.

“When they switched to a back three in the second half, it gave us more space on the wings — and that’s how our first goal came. The boys executed perfectly.”

Akonnor also praised his squad depth and team spirit, noting that even those not starting remain fully engaged in the system.

“Everyone, even the players on the bench, understands how we play,” he said. “When we make substitutions, we’re confident that whoever comes in knows their role and fits right in. That’s the kind of team environment we’ve built.”

Despite the strong start to the season, the former Black Stars boss insisted that Gor Mahia are keeping their feet firmly on the ground.

“We’re not perfect yet — football is a continuous learning process. But the important thing is that we’re learning together. The players are improving every game, and we, as the technical team, are growing with them.”

With the win over Mathare United, Gor Mahia continue their impressive momentum, sitting comfortably near the top of the FKF Premier League table as they chase a record-extending title.
