We have a chance: Super Eagles star remains optimistic of Nigeria's world cup ticket despite struggles
Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup were dealt a significant blow following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Uyo during the last international break.
The Super Eagles, currently fourth in Group C, are six points behind leaders South Africa with only four matches left to play.

However, midfielder Frank Onyeka, who missed the games against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, remains optimistic about Nigeria’s chances, urging the team to focus on winning their remaining games.
“You can never say that,” Onyeka said when asked about the possibility of missing out on the World Cup.
The draw against bottom-of-the-table Zimbabwe left fans frustrated, as Nigeria failed to capitalise on home advantage.
That result followed a challenging campaign that included only one win, four draws, and one loss in six matches.
The Super Eagles now face a steep uphill battle to secure a spot in the tournament set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Despite the setbacks, Onyeka remains optimistic, adding that the Eagles must, however, win the remaining matches.
“We still have the chance to qualify, so we need to win our four games and hopefully we qualify,” he added.
The midfielder, who hopes to return for upcoming matches, emphasised the importance of unity and determination in turning their fortunes around.
Nigeria must win all four of their remaining fixtures, including crucial clashes against South Africa and Rwanda, to keep their World Cup dream alive.
The road ahead is daunting, but Nigeria’s history as three-time African champions and regular World Cup participants suggests they have the potential to overcome adversity.
With key players like Onyeka rallying behind the team and critical matches looming, the Super Eagles will need to deliver their best performances yet to secure qualification.
