‘We wonder why they don’t perform’ - Ex-Super Eagles coach demands salary increment for indigenous managers

The former Nigerian international managed the Super Eagles in 2015 and had a stellar run during his time.

With the Super Eagles, Oliseh only lost twice in 14 games while scoring 19 goals and giving up just six goals.

Before leaving after eight months, he led Nigeria to the group rounds of the 2018 World Cup qualifying and successfully qualified them for the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Oliseh expressed his dissatisfaction with the glaring salary gap between Nigerian and foreign coaches in the senior national football team.

Speaking on SuperSport’s Monday Night Football as per the Nation, Oliseh said, “Some might not like what I’m about to say, but when I was coaching the Super Eagles, my salary was N5m a month—equivalent to about $12,850 at that time.

“The late Stephen Keshi won the African Cup of Nations on the same pay. Yet, when we hire foreign coaches, we pay them $70,000 or $56,000, while our best indigenous coaches earn just $12,500. Then we wonder why they don’t perform?”

The Super Eagles legend has asked that the salary of the coaches be reviewed and should be equivalent to that of the foreign coaches.

Meanwhile, Oliseh has said that the Super Eagles are at risk of not qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
