Shilla Omuriwe’s charges came from a game down to defeat Ndejje Elites 2-1 in the semifinals before sweeping Sport-S in the finals.

KCCA Ladies are still celebrating their first National Volleyball League title in 17 years.

Shilla Omuriwe’s charges came from a game down to defeat Ndejje Elites 2-1 in the semifinals before sweeping Sport-S in the finals.

There were exceptional talents on both ends of the net, but ultimately, only six players plus a libero will make our team from the finals.

That the finals ended in a clean sweep might suggest the series were one-sided, but some names impressed even in defeat.

Supernatural Mbakisimira (Centre blocker) -KCCA

Winner of the league with the Ndejje Elites last season, Mbakisimira was an ever-present threat of offence.

She stepped up to make big points whenever the outside hitters slowed down. She was often found wanting in the service box but made up for all that every time she stepped into the front court.

Her block was also consistent in the two games.

Zainah Kagoya (Centre blocker) -KCCA

She can be deceptive with her height. Kagoya is one of the best middle blockers and played so well to stop Ndejje’s Catherine Ainembabazi in the semifinals.

Her performance stretched to the finals as she blocked well and struck through the opposition block whenever Jojo Muindi provided a good set.

Comfort Tumusiime (Receiver-attacker) -Sport-S

Sport-S struggled in the finals compared to how impressive they were in the regular season.

But Tumusiime was one of the consistent players both on reception and in attack. She started both games on the front foot and scored points, but Sport-S faded along the way to lose both.

Eunice Amuron (Receiver-attacker) -KCCA

The team captain was up to it and made light work of the Sport-S block throughout the series.

She also did well with the reception to ensure the first pass was perfect and allowed smooth offence.

Doreen Akiteng (Setter) -Sport-S

She worked well with whatever the reception gave her and was able to run the team’s offence. She also had some excellent dumps and used her attackers well.

Unfortunately for her, the other end of the net had the block to stop most of the attacks.

Joan Tushemereirwe (Opposite) -KCCA

Easily the best player on that court. She barely jumps but has the power to go through whatever block is put before her.

She demolished the Sport-S block throughout the series, and her strike sealed the deal to send the KCCA fans into a frenzy.

Christine Asekenye (Libero) -KCCA

There were two good liberos in the series, but Christine Asekenye was simply the best choice for this slot.

Her reception and backcourt defence were exceptional. She gave the team the right first pass throughout the series, which allowed for smooth offence.

Shilla Omuriwe (Coach) -KCCA

She won the league, so the decision was relatively easy. In her second year with the club, she helped the club get over the line to land their first league title since 2006.

However, her opposite number Malic Damulira has to be commended for taking Sport-S to their first-ever final.
