Record National Volleyball League champions Nemostars and five-time league winners KAVC are the only sides to have expressed interest in the event.

Two teams from Uganda are expected to take part in this weekend’s Genocide Memorial Volleyball Tournament in Kigali, Rwanda.

Record National Volleyball League champions Nemostars and five-time league winners KAVC are the only sides to have expressed interest in the event.

Nemostars are a team in transition and failed to make the playoffs last season. And having lost to Juba in the Dr. Aporu Okol tournament over the weekend, the action in Kigali is expected to fine-tune the team before the new season in Uganda.

Willington Talemwa is one of the key pieces Nemostars have added to their roster, and the tournament will help with creating chemistry with the rest of the players.

The core of team captain George Aporu, setter Smith Okumu and middle blocker Bernard Malinga remained intact as the team looks to bounce back to the playoffs next season.

For KAVC, last season was the best they have played since winning their last league title in 2014.

Having finished the regular season in second place, Memory Dube’s charges fell 2-1 to UCU Doves in the semi-finals and are now trying to move a step further in their development.

Rwandan sides APR (men and women) swept aside KAVC and KCCA, respectively, to win the NSSF KAVC International Tournament last year and will offer the biggest test this weekend.

Uganda Volleyball Cranes stars Daudi Okello (Rwanda National Police), Kathbert Malinga (Gisagara) and Gideon Angiro (APR) are all expected to shine in the tournament.
