During last year's edition of the event, Kosgei also had to withdraw from the race due to a knee injury.

Women’s only world marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei has suddenly withdrawn from the 2023 London Marathon three minutes into the race.

After two minutes into the race, Kosgei was seen limping and seemed to be struggling to keep up the pace. After three minutes, she couldn’t continue with the race and had to withdraw.

In a pre-race interview, Kosgei revealed that she was suffering from a hamstring injury but was hopeful of displaying a great performance, however, it seems like things got out of hand.

She noted that she had gotten the injury two weeks before the event and had to take a break from training. Kosgei is always hard to beat when she’s on top of her game but today, April 23 was not a good day in the office for her.

Since the year began, Kosgei has only competed at the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon in February, where she settled for fourth place in 1:06:34.

The last time Kosgei ran a marathon was in Tokyo in February 2022 where she ran 2:16:02, the third fastest time back then (now the sixth-fastest).

The focus now shifts to Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir, who will be battling it out with defending champion Yalemzerf Yehualaw to reclaim the title. Other Kenyans in the race include the 2022 Paris Marathon champion Judith Korir and the Commonwealth 10,000m bronze medallist Sheila Chepkurui.
