The purpose of the visit is to support the Aliguma Foundation, an initiative of Sports Journalist Ritah Aliguma.

European football's governing body, UEFA's president, Aleksander Čeferin is to undertake a two-day visit to Uganda for the first time.

This visit is scheduled to start on March 14 and climax on March 16, with Čeferin expected to connect to Uganda from Rwanda.

The purpose of the visit is to support the Aliguma Foundation, an initiative of Sports Journalist Ritah Aliguma.

“This is big news and we don’t take it lightly that the UEFA president Čeferin has taken it upon himself to visit,” said the foundation’s CEO Aliguma.

“We never envisaged it and although we want him to tour different locations of our projects, we know we cannot because of the time factor.”

“We shall squeeze in as much as we can in the time he will be with us. It is going to be historic for us as a foundation as we have only been in existence since 2017.”

“Preparations for the monumental visit are underway and all our partner schools are excited," Aliguma stressed.

The foundation was established to help the underprivileged through sports. Čeferin's visit is expected to further enhance the foundation's works in the country.

It should be noted that the Aliguma Foundation was a recipient of the UEFA Foundation for Children grant, which was part of 65 humanitarian projects worth €4.9 million worldwide before the coronavirus pandemic.

After the foundation's remarkable efforts in the country, the governing body of football in Europe was equally excited with the progress and decided to offer the foundation a second grant.

During the visit, Čeferin, accompanied by UEFA General Secretary Urs Kluser and Kevin Lamour, a member of the board, will have a series of open media engagements.

He will attend a school sports gala at Acholi Quarters where he will see the elderly women and girl-child exhibitions of their works.

The visit will conclude with a visit to the State House, where he will have soccer development talks with the First Lady & National Minister of Education & Sports Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni alongside Hon. Peter Ogwang, the State Minister for Sports.

Ogwang has helped a great deal in making the visit happen as well as its ongoing preparations alongside the national soccer governing body - Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA).

The Aliguma Foundation has refurbished the multi-purpose Acholi Quarters Playground and improved the structures and status of the Annual Banda Slums Soccer Tournament.

“These are the stories we want to be globally shared,” Čeferin earlier said of the foundation’s work.

Through its work, the foundation also bought a 15-acre piece of land in Kinuuma Village, Masindi District and started construction works at Aliguma Foundation Sports & Empowerment Center (AFSEC) among others.
