Super Eagles honor four fans who died during AFCON semi-finals with a minute silence.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria paid a heartfelt tribute to the memory of four devoted fans whose lives were tragically cut short during the intense semi-final clash with South Africa at the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The solemn tribute took place on Thursday night, February 8, uniting the players in grief and respect.

Among those mourned were Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, a distinguished APC chieftain and medical practitioner, who met his untimely demise in Abuja when the match's tension reached a fever pitch after South Africa secured a late equalizer as per TRT Afrika.

Despite immediate medical intervention, Ojougboh could not be revived, leaving behind a legacy of political service and unwavering patriotism.

Alongside Ojougboh were an Ivory Coast-based Nigerian entrepreneur, a dedicated NYSC member, and Alhaji Ayuba Abdullahi, the Deputy Bursar of Kwara State University, all of whom shared a common passion for football that tragically led to their demise on the night of February 7.

The West African nation has rallied around these somber events, with President Tinubu expressing his condolences and highlighting Ojougboh's significant contributions to Nigeria's political landscape.

"While praying for the peaceful repose of the departed, President Tinubu comforts his family and urges them to find strength and hope in God Almighty," said presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale in a statement.

Atiku Abubakar, a former presidential candidate and political rival, paid homage to Ojougboh's unwavering dedication to Nigeria, emphasizing the personal loss felt across the political divide.

The Super Eagles' gesture of remembrance comes as they prepare to face the host nation, Cote D’Ivoire, in a highly anticipated final on Sunday.

Both teams secured their spots after victorious semi-final matches, setting the stage for a showdown that promises to captivate football enthusiasts across Africa and beyond.
