The Gunners are reportedly ready to test Chelsea's resolve by signing another of their players in the space of six months.

Arsenal will rival Liverpool in the battle to sign Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount this summer, signalling a change in Mikel Arteta’s transfer plans.

The Gunners‘ recent slip in the Premier League title bid has evidently exposed vulnerabilities within their squad.

The Spanish manager is now openly keen to patch up those holes this summer, rather than splash out all his available cash on one player.

Since January, Arsenal have been linked with West Ham captain Declan Rice as well as Brighton star Moises Caicedo, whose 80 million-pound bid was turned down by Brighton in January.

In the 4-1 defeat to Manchester City in midweek, which saw the momentum of the title race switch to the blue half of Manchester, Arsenal were continuously susceptible to being exposed to transitional situations in the middle of the park, struggling to beat City’s 4-2-4 press with Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne continuously combining, giving Thomas Partey a torrid time.

Arteta is keen to oversee a makeover of his midfield options to give his team more of a solid foundation, but he is also aware of other problem areas in his squad that also need addressing.

Rice has been a key target for the club for months, but West Ham’s valuation of £100 million or more could see Arsenal look elsewhere.

Caicedo is another option, but he signed a new contract with Brighton after seeing a possible January transfer to the Emirates Stadium fall through, so he will not come cheap either.

According to the Daily Mail, the former captain feels it would be wiser to spread that money across the signing of a few more players to add cover to his squad. It makes sense considering they will be back in the Champions League for the first time in six years.

Arsenal have entered the race for Mason Mount, who is said to be unsettled at Chelsea as he enters the final year of his contract.

He has reportedly turned down a £200,000-a-week offer from Chelsea because he feels deserving of a deal closer to Raheem Sterling’s £300,000-a-week deal he signed with the London club last summer.

With negotiations said to be at a halt, Liverpool and Manchester United are said to be interested in taking advantage, and now Arsenal have joined the chase.

Arsenal are keen to upgrade their left side of the midfield, with reports suggesting they are ready to listen to offers for Granit Xhaka despite him being a key player for them this season.

Mount’s versatility may suit what Arsenal want. He can play as an attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 formation, as a half-space operator just behind the striker, and has shown he can play in a double pivot alongside a defensive midfielder, as he has done for England at times.

He also possesses a work rate off the ball, which suits Arteta’s expansive system that emphasizes relentless pressing without the ball.
