The midfielder is nearing a return to full fitness having suffered a quadriceps injury in December.

AS Monaco midfielder Eliot Matazo is nearing a return to full fitness from a quadriceps injury that prevented him from taking part in a majority of matches in December.

The midfielder who was born in Belgium to a Congolese Malagasy father and Kenyan mother is expected to return to training within the next three weeks.

The injury was set to rule him out for between six to eight weeks, having suffered it at the start of December.

Matazo, who represents Belgium at the U21 level could also play for Kenya or DRC in the future and has played a very peripheral role at the club since the arrival of former Chelsea midfielder Dennis Zakaria in the off-season, accumulating just 98 minutes of league football this season.

Last season, he featured 29 times in all competitions, starting 13 Ligue 1 games. He has not yet started a game this season.

Speaking at the start of November, Adi Hütter suggested that a departure, either on loan or permanently, was being considered for Matazo.

“Sometimes the players aren’t 100% satisfied,” began Hütter in a press conference, attended by Get French Football News.

“That is normal in football when you have lots of players for just one or two places. I like him a lot as a player.

“He is an interesting player who always trains at a high level. It is now my problem because I have lots of players for few positions.

“We may need to think for the future what to do with Eliot but I want to congratulate him on his attitude on a daily basis,” said the Austrian.

Matazo has been stylistically compared to Aulerien Tchouameni of Real Madrid, who was once his teammate at Monaco before moving on to the Spanish giants in 2022.
