Super Eagles technical director Augustine Eguaveon speaks about Jose Peseiro’s future with the Nigerian national team.

Augustine Eguavoen, the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has recently shared his thoughts on the Super Eagles' journey in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

Super Eagles' Solid Defence and Scoring Challenges

Eguavoen praised the Super Eagles for their robust performance in Group A, where they secured two wins and a draw, finishing second. He expressed satisfaction with the team's defensive record, anchored by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, but pointed out the need for improvement in goal-scoring.

Eguavoen stated, “The Eagles are playing with caution... The only thing we’re missing is the conversion of chances into the net... Defensively, we are very solid; the goal-keeping department is solid. The organisation of the team is good."

Peseiro's Job Security and Positive Narrative

On the topic of Peseiro’s future with the Super Eagles, Eguavoen addressed the rumors surrounding the coach's contract.

While he claimed to be unaware of the NFF's internal decisions, he emphasised the importance of maintaining a positive outlook, regardless of Peseiro's fate. “If that is the decision of the federation, then I stand by it... Whether Peseiro leaves now or later, let’s say positive things about him... Let’s be careful of what we say," Eguavoen advised.

Eguavoen, who previously managed the Super Eagles and led them to a strong start in the last AFCON edition before a round of 16 exit, understands the pressures and expectations surrounding the national team.
