A Kenyan comedian was hospitalised after trying to consume a bowl of pepper to honour a promise he made before Manchester United’s dramatic loss to Chelsea on Thursday.

A Kenyan comedian was hospitalised following a failed attempt to consume a bowl of pepper to honour a promise he made before the Premier League match between Chelsea and Manchester United on Thursday 5 April.

KK Mwenyewe, famous for mimicking Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was so sure of Manchester United beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge that he made a public promise to eat a bowl of pepper if the Red Devils lost.

“If Chelsea beats Man-U tonight nitakula 1kg of pilipili (If Chelsea beats Man United tonight, I will eat 1kg of pepper),” read the message from a placard that he displayed online on Thursday.

Things seemed to go according to plan for him until deep in time added on when Cole Palmer stung Erik ten Hag’s men.

The Blues raced to a 2-0 lead courtesy of Connor Gallagher and a Palmer penalty but Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes brought United level just before halftime.

Garnacho then seemed to have won it for United when he scored a third goal in the second half and Ten Hag’s side held on until added time when late drama unfolded.

With eight minutes added on, seven had been played when Diogo Dalot gave away a penalty which Palmer converted for 3-3. Less than two minutes later, Chelsea took a corner with the ball squared to Palmer who hammered home via a Scott McTominay deflection to hand the home side all three points.

“As I had promised that if Chelsea beat Manchester United, I will eat 1kg of chili. I don’t know what are the repercussions, whatever will happen after this, I blame Manchester United players,” a crestfallen KK Mwenyewe said as he went about trying to honour his promise.

After consuming a little chili, the effects got the better of him as he gasped for air while trying to swallow. He could not finish and tried to take a soft drink and later brushed his teeth in a bid to reduce the effects.

It turns out he could not handle the effects and had to seek medical attention on Friday.

“It has been a long day, I am good, I quit football,” he posted while on his hospital bed.

While it could have been one of his skits, it turned out to be a costly joke that he will not be repeating.

This is the third such bizarre incident in Kenya coming after a match involving Manchester United this season.

In March, a man in Kawagware, Nairobi was left nursing injuries after he was hit on the head by a piece of sharp granite by a female fan following a confrontation during the first half of the Manchester derby in which United lost 3-1 to Manchester City.

In September 2023, a man had to be rushed to the hospital when he tried to consume a tray of boiled eggs after Ten Hag’s men also lost 3-1 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

He was reportedly so sure of United winning the match that he promised fellow fans that he would consume a tray of eggs if the Red Devils lost.

As it turned out, the Gunners triumphed but he struggled to honour his promise, leading to the unfortunate incident that also saw him hospitalised.
