With Uganda, along with Kenya and Tanzania, set to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Onyango is optimistic the team will be better should Put be given the patience and chance.

"The most important thing is for the fans to give the coach a chance because there's something we're building as a country," Onyango told Pulse Sports in an interview.

"And most importantly, the PAMOJA Bid has to be represented very well in the next few years, and we can't be chopping and changing coaches every two years."

According to Onyango, it will be important for the team's stability and unity if the coaching staff is uninterrupted.

"So, the boys have to be stable with one coach. We give him a chance because he has been with strong international teams, which means he's been doing a great job."

"But, if we don't give him the confidence and belief, I think it will be difficult. As a country, we need to rally behind and support him regardless of the results."

Uganda opened the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign with mixed results, losing 2-1 to Guinea before a 1-0 victory over Somalia.

The two games marked Put and his new technical team's first games in charge of the Cranes.
