Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa has stressed the importance of investing in grassroots football in order to help lay sustainable foundations for the future of the sport in the country.
Mwendwa said that the return of Safaricom's Chapa Dimba tournament was a good way of continuing to identify unearthed gems and help them launch their careers as footballers.

The event will be held for the first time after the COVID-19 pandemic halted proceedings in 2020
“Chapa Dimba is a very important tournament because of its impact on Kenyan society,” he said, “A kid from Kilifi with no basic needs like football boots gets to express himself using this platform and another from Kapenguria will get the chance to play football,” Mwendwa added.
“We want to give these children the opportunity to showcase their talents. Even some of the best African players to ever kick a ball, the likes of Drogba, Eto’o, and Asamoah Gyan came from these grassroots levels. They too can be the next big stars.
“Players like (Henry) Meja who is now in Sweden and (David) Majak of Tusker were taken from the grassroots level through this tournament.

Mwendwa encouraged the youth to apply for season four this month in order to stand a chance of launching their professional careers, with the registration deadline set for Wednesday, May 31.
“We have a typical team and every match played has scouts. They get to watch every match. Every county has its best players who form all-star teams that then come to compete with each other. The best of the best gets identified.

Chapa Dimba: Safaricom boss urges youth to maximize tournament opportunities
Ndegwa wants you talented youth to register and play in the tourney.
“Even with Premier League clubs, they get to identify talent they can use to help them, so it goes both ways. Players like Benson Omala are at Gor Mahia (by way of Western Stima) because of this tournament. That is our responsibility as the federation.”
Teams can register for the tourney via the Safaricom Website or pick up the registration forms from any Safaricom shop and local FKF branch offices.
