Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat has started with an experienced lineup as his side seek to beat hosts Malawi at the Four Nations tournament.

Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat has opted for an experienced line-up as his side takes on hosts Malawi in the Four Nations Tournament.

Firat has trusted Kenya Police goalkeeper Patrick Matasi between the sticks for the clash in Lilongwe, extending his stay in goal since the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in November, with Bryne Omondi, who returned from injury recently, having to wait.

Daniel Ayembe has shaken off fitness doubts to make it into the starting line-up at right-back while AFC Leopards’ Vincent Mahiga has got the nod over Geoffrey Ochieng at left-back in the absence of the injured Erick ‘Marcelo’ Ouma.

Johnstone Omurwa maintains his place in central defence and will be partnered by Joseph Okumu, another injury doubt for the match who has made the starting XI. The two have formed a good partnership in previous matches and Firat will be happy to have them.

Firat has also kept faith with the central midfield of Richard Odada and Anthony ‘Teddy’ Akumu but Kenneth Muguna misses out with Tusker FC’s Chrispine Erambo making his national team debut.

Odada and Akumu will play at the base of midfield with Erambo given the freedom to roam and help create chances for the forwards.

Upfront, captain Michael Olunga is still leading the line, seeking to pick up from where he left in November, having ended his six-game drought with two goals in the 5-0 thrashing of Seychelles.

Gor Mahia’s youngster Rooney Onyango will play on the right wing while Ayub Timbe, gets a rare start on the left wing.

Kenya and Malawi last faced off in September 2018 when Harambee Stars won 1-0 but the two teams have played each other eight times, each winning twice while four matches have ended in draws.

The winner of the match will take on Zimbabwe in the Four Nations Tournament final after the Warriors beat Zambia on penalties in Saturday’s early kick off.

Harambee Stars starting XI: Patrick Matasi, Daniel Anyembe, Vincent Mahiga, Johnstone Omurwa, Joseph Okumu, Richard Odada, Anthony Akumu, Chrispine Erambo, Rooney Onyango, Michael Olunga, Ayub Timbe
