‘It’s scary’ - Ten Hag’s Manchester United berated for collapse against Coventry

ESPN’s Craig Burley laid into the Red Devils for another unconvincing performance in the FA Cup semi-final win over Coventry.

Former Scotland and Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley has criticised Manchester United’s showing in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final triumph over Coventry.

Coventry vs Manchester United

The Red Devils led 2-0 at halftime through Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire before Bruno Fernandes notched United’s third just before the hour to leave Ten Hag’s men cruising as the game entered its final half-hour.

Man United entered the final 20 minutes still 3-0 up, but familiar failings saw them concede twice in minutes 71 and 79 — Ellis Simms and Callum O'Hare — before Aaron Wan-Bissaka was penalised for a handball in the Manchester giants’ 18-yard area, conceded a late spot-kick.

The last-gasp penalty was converted by Haji Wright to send the game into extra time, and Coventry thought they won it when Victor Torp netted at the death in extra time, only for the goal to be ruled out for a marginal offside by VAR.

Despite Casemiro’s penalty miss, United responded to score their next four and profited from O'Hare and Ben Sheaf's failures to win the shootout 4-2.

What did Burley say about Manchester United?

Speaking on Sunday’s ESPN FC show, the pundit condemned the United performance, pointing to the consistency of such displays by Ten Hag’s team.

“We have seen this a lot from this Manchester United side a lot this season, but it’s always been against Premier League teams,” said Burley.

“And even that’s a hard one to take. We think: ‘How can you be dominated by Bournemouth at home? How can you be dominated by Brentford? How can they struggle against Sheffield United?’ We scratch our heads at it.

“Now we’ve moved down another level and say: ‘How can they cling on to this and manage to get through against a Championship side and almost blow it in the manner in which they did?’

“It’s scary.”

What comes next for Manchester United?

Ten Hag’s side hope to record their first Premier League success since March 9 — a 2-0 victory over Everton — when they host relegation-threatened Sheffield United at Old Trafford on April 24. Manchester United welcome Burnley three days later.
