The Harambee Stars defender has featured sparingly this season but he will hope for regular playtime after making it to the Liga Portugal.

Harambee Stars defender Johnstone Omurwa will play in the Portuguese top-flight next season after securing promotion with his side Estrela da Amadora over the weekend.

The former Wazito FC defender, who joined the club in August 2022, was not in the matchday squad as Estrela da Amadora beat Maritimo 3-2 on penalties in the promotion playoffs to earn a ticket to the Liga Portugal, where they have not been since 2008-09.

Both teams had finished the two-legged promotion playoff 3-3 on aggregate with Estrela da Amadora winning 2-1 on Sunday, having lost by the same margin in the first leg a week earlier.

In the second leg of the playoff, the Islanders equalised with a goal from Chucho Ramirez in stoppage time after Xadas gave the locals an initial advantage before Miguel Lopes restored the tie with a 26th-minute goal.

In the shootout, Jean Filipe, Mansur, and Vito scored for Estrela with only Aloisio missing, while for the Islanders, Claudio Winck and Andre Vidigal scored as Diogo Mendes, Chuchu Ramirez, and Felix Correia missed.

Maritimo, who have been among the ‘big ones’ since 1985-86, earning 38 consecutive top-flight appearances, fought for a place in the main division, finishing 16th in Liga Portugal, while Estrela da Amadora were third in the second tier to earn the playoff berth.

Omurwa, who has made seven league appearances and two in the cup, was unveiled by the Portuguese side just a month after Israeli club Sektzia Ness Ziona FC reported that they had signed him although it was later revealed that he did not impress them in the trials.

The club is based in Amadora, northwest of Lisbon, and was newly founded in 2020 when Clube Desportivo Estrela merged with Club Sintra Football.

Omurwa was not included in the Harambee Stars squad for the Four-Nations Tournament currently ongoing in Mauritius.
