Kayci Odhiambo reveals what it is really like to be a captain at AFC Leopards while discussing season objectives.

AFC Leopards defender Kayci Odhiambo has described wearing the captain’s armband as “a privilege”.

Odhiambo, who signed for AFC Leopards during the Covid-19 pandemic after succeeding on trial, has grown to become a very influential figure in how they play, especially with the club’s desire to build play from the back.

The midfielder-cum center back is now part of the leadership group at the club, often wearing the armband in the absence of Washington Munene, Cliff Nyakeya, and Clifton Miheso, and was he captain for the day during their 2-0 win over Kariobangi Sharks on Sunday.

Speaking to Pulse Sports, Odhiambo insisted that he was grateful to have been considered a dressing room leader by coach Tomas Trucha despite the squad also possessing a lot of capable leaders.

“I feel very privileged,” Odhiambo said.

“I want to thank the coach. I cannot say I deserve it because there are many strong characters in the dressing room as well, but it was his choice.

“I also want to thank the players for accepting me as one of the captains. Actually, wearing the band is not even an issue. The issue is wearing the band but people do not listen to what you are saying.

“I feel like my fellow players have a big role to play.”

Odhiambo has never managed to see out a season without suffering a setback. He has already had to endure two career-threatening injuries, but so far this season has managed to maintain a clean bill of health.

Quizzed about whether his aim now is to try and break into Engin Firat’s Harambee Stars setup, Odhiambo gave a realistic response.

“I am not even thinking about wanting to get into the national team right now.  Since joining AFC Leopards, I have never managed to complete a whole season without getting injured.

“This is my first term where I am injury free and I am praying to God that I will still see it out unscathed. The next season, I will leave it all to God.”

His humble approach and reliance on faith in the future show a player who is grounded and determined to contribute positively to his team while prioritizing his well-being.

It will be interesting to see how Odhiambo's leadership and performance continue to evolve throughout the season.
