Kenyan international Clyde Senaji experienced near victory at a prestigious Malawi Super League gala.

Kenyan international Clyde Senaji faced disappointment as he narrowly missed out on the coveted Malawi Super League's Defender of the Year award during the awards ceremony held at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre.

Despite his impressive performances for Nyasa Big Bullets, Senaji was edged out by Mighty Mukuru Wanderers' Stanley Sanudi in the race for the prestigious accolade on Friday night.

Senaji, a 26-year-old defender known for his solid skills on the field, had an exceptional season, participating in 18 matches for the full 90 minutes.

Along the way, he earned three yellow cards, displaying his commitment and physicality in defense.

Notably, Senaji was also honored with the Man of the Match title on one occasion, a testament to his crucial contributions to Nyasa Big Bullets throughout the 2023 season.

However, it was Stanley Sanudi of MightyMukuru Wanderers who ultimately scooped the Best Defender of the Season award, leaving Senaji and his fans with mixed emotions.

Sanudi's outstanding performances on the pitch evidently caught the attention of the judges and fans alike, securing him the top spot in the category.

Despite this setback, Nyasa Big Bullets had their moments to celebrate during the awards ceremony.

Patrick Mwaungulu, another standout player from the club, emerged as the biggest winner of the evening.

Mwaungulu was honored as both the Player of the Season and Midfielder of the Season, acknowledging his remarkable contributions throughout the season.

Bangwe All Stars' Robert Saizi was named Rookie of the Season, a recognition of his promising talent and impact on the league.

Dedza Dynamos' Clement Nyondo clinched the Top Goal Scorer's award with an impressive tally of 16 goals, surpassing his competitors, including Lanjesi Nkhoma, who managed 14 goals.

The coaching staff was not left out of the accolades as Kalisto Pasuwa, who guided Nyasa Big Bullets to their first-ever quadruple victory, was named Coach of the Year.

Pasuwa's leadership and tactical acumen were vital in the team's historic achievement, clinching the Airtel Top 8, Super League, FDH Bank Cup, and Castel Challenge Cup titles.

Innocent Nyasulu, who recently joined The People's Team, was recognized with the Golden Glove award.

Nyasulu's exceptional goalkeeping skills were on full display as he kept 13 clean sheets in 28 matches for Tigers, making him a standout performer in the league.

On the team awards front, Chitipa United, who finished fourth in the standings, received the Most Improved Team award, highlighting their progress and dedication.

Wanderers secured the third-place position in the league, with Silver Strikers coming in second, narrowly behind Bullets, who secured their fifth consecutive league title.

The nomination process for the Best Defender award involved a rigorous evaluation conducted by Super League club captains, coaches, and fixtures committee members.

Senaji's journey in football has been marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence, evident in his contributions to various clubs before joining Nyasa Big Bullets.

His role in the team's historic quadruple victory underscores his importance and dedication to the sport, making him a significant figure in the Malawi Super League.

Prior to his tenure with Nyasa Big Bullets, he was in the books of FKF Premier League side Tusker FC, having previously turned out for AFC Leopards and Vihiga United.
