Gor Mahia striker Benson Omala has gone four games without scoring but he is unfazed by his dry spell as K’Ogalo target Tusker’s scalp in Saturday’s major clash

Gor Mahia striker Benson Omala is not bothered by his dry spell in front of goal, saying he contributes more than just goals to the team.

Omala, who is the FKF Premier League’s top scorer with nine goals, has gone four games without scoring, allowing others to close in on the golden boot race and he is now trailed by Moses Shumah (Kakamega Homeboyz), Francis Kahiro, who has ditched KCB for Bandari, Vincent Owino of Nairobi City Stars, Tusker’s Eric Kapaito and Boniface Muchiri of Ulinzi Stars, who all have six goals.

The striker’s last goal came on December 9 when he slotted home a penalty as Gor Mahia came from two goals down to draw with Nzoia Sugar.

Since then, he has not been able to find the back of the net although his team has kept winning, beating FC Talanta 2-0 before recording three straight 1-0 wins against Bandari, Posta Rangers and Kariobangi Sharks, something that gives him more joy than being on the score sheet.

“The team is winning and keeping clean sheets,” Omala told The Good Company KE podcast.

“Defending starts from the front [with the strikers] going back so if I have not scored, pressure still comes from me to enable somebody else to score. If another striker scores, also the pressure is off me.”

While he is seemingly in a tough golden boot race, Omala says there is no rivalry between him and the other strikers who he keeps touch with and even encourage each other.

“Eric Kapaito, Elvis Rupia are good strikers and we have been competing. As strikers, we talk and when someone scores a good goal you let them know and give each other motivation,” he added.

Omala will come up against Kapaito on Saturday when Gor Mahia host Tusker FC in a high stakes match and the spotlight is likely to be on the two strikers given their contrasting recent run in front of goal.

The Gor Mahia forward came up trumps in the corresponding fixture when he netted the lone goal as K’Ogalo run out 1-0 winners in October but Kapaito has found his feet, scoring six goals in the last five matches, which will make for an epic battle.

It is, however, not the first time Omala has gone through a barren spell as he went for five matches without scoring last season before scoring when it mattered, in the final game, as Gor Mahia came from a goal down to beat Nairobi City Stars 4-1 and claim their 20th league title.
