A Ugandan coach is set to serve in a big role at MLS club New York Red Bulls following his promotion from the second-string side.

Ugandan football has been put on the global map following the appointment of ex-Uganda Cranes captain Ibrahim Sekagya as assistant coach of Major League Soccer (MLS) side New York Red Bulls FC.

Sekagya was promoted, having been serving as the head coach for the reserve team (New York Red Bulls II), in the MLS Next Pro League since February 2023.

He is best remembered for his time at KCC FC in the Ugandan Premier League between 1997 and 2001 and also as Cranes skipper, having made 35 appearances for the national team, while scoring three goals.

The former defender will now coach a New York Red Bulls FC team that he featured for between 2013-2014 after moving from sister club New York Red Bulls Salzburg.

“Ibrahim Sekagya has been promoted to a full-time First Team Assistant Coach. Ibra will join the first team immediately and coach his final at New York Red Bulls II match will be on June 15 vs Chattanooga FC,” announced the Club on Tuesday.

“We are pleased to add Ibra [Sekagya] to our first team coaching staff on a full-time basis,” said Head of Sport Jochen Schneider.

“He has led the development of many great players at NYRB II and have led the team to a great start to the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro season. He has earned this opportunity, and we are grateful to have him as a part of this organization.”

Reacting to his big role, Sekagya went to social media to celebrate the appointment, writing: “It’s with great pleasure!” on X.
