Uganda Cranes coach Morley Byekwaso praised his team's performance against Senegal but emphasised the need for further improvement ahead of CHAN.

Uganda Cranes were in a class of their own as they obliterated Senegal 2-1 in the second match of the ongoing CECAFA pre-CHAN Tournament at the Black Rhino Sports Centre Stadium in Karatu, Tanzania.

The Uganda Cranes started their campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Tanzania but bounced back stunningly, claiming victory over Senegal, who were the favourites to win.

In the first half, Uganda’s Emmanuel Anyama missed a clear chance after 29 minutes, with Senegal’s Joseph Layousse Samb also missing. The first half drama continued as Ameth Niang’s strike was saved by Uganda’s goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa.

After the first half, both teams made several changes. Arnord Odong put Uganda in the lead after 64 minutes, scoring a goal as the Senegal defenders failed to clear their lines.

Just three minutes later, Uganda earned a penalty after Senegal’s goalkeeper Marc Philips Arona committed a foul inside the box, which substitute Patrick Kakande calmly converted.

However, the reigning CHAN champions continued to press and were eventually rewarded in the 88th minute when substitute Serigne Moctar Koite finished from close range.

Souleymane Diallo, Senegal’s head coach, said that although they lost the match to Uganda, the match had helped his team to pick out a few weak points that they must improve.

“We need to change our game plan against Tanzania on Sunday,” added Diallo.

Ugandan coach Morley Byekwaso expressed satisfaction with the hunger and determination his players displayed on the pitch.

He also highlighted key areas that need to be addressed as the team prepares for the upcoming African Nations Championship.

“I am happy we managed to win the match, but also push more in attack and defend well,” Byekwaso said.

CECAFA Executive Director Auka Gecheo said they are pleased to organise the tournament, which has served as a valuable platform for teams in the region to prepare for the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Uganda Cranes have been pooled in Group and they will face off against Algeria, Guinea, Niger and South Africa.
