Uganda Cranes fans hoping to come to Namboole Stadium donning jerseys with vulgar inscriptions have been given a warning as they will not gain access for CHAN 2024 matches.
As Uganda prepares for a crucial CHAN 2024 quarterfinal against Senegal, organizers have warned that fans wearing jerseys with offensive or inappropriate inscriptions will be denied entry to the stadium.
The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) issued the firm directive ahead of the highly anticipated clash between the Uganda Cranes and Senegal at Namboole Stadium this Saturday.
Speaking at the Uganda Media Centre on Wednesday, Diana Nabuuso, a member of the LOC's Communications and Signage Committee, stated that supporters with inappropriate attire will be turned away at the gates.
"We condemn anyone wearing offensive jerseys, what we call ‘mini’s’ or any wording that disrespects public image," Nabuuso told journalists. "Such fans will be stopped at the gates. We encourage discipline, respect, and unity from all supporters."
The crackdown targets a recent trend of jerseys featuring viral slang and catchphrases popularized on social media platforms like TikTok and Facebook. While many fans see the phrases as humorous, organizers believe some inscriptions cross the line of public decency.
What Else Has Been Confirmed for Uganda vs Senegal?
Dr Dennis K. Mugimba, Chairperson of the LOC Communications and Signage Sub-Committee, also clarified issues regarding ticketing and stadium capacity.
He explained that while tickets may sell out, some seats remain empty due to safety regulations mandated by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
"CAF configures ticket sales to leave a buffer of around 4,000 seats. This is a safety precaution, not a sign of mismanagement," Dr Mugimba said. "The effective sellout number at Namboole is 34,006 seats, not the full 38,000 capacity."
With the Uganda Cranes leading their group, the match against defending champions Senegal has generated significant excitement. The LOC has urged fans to maintain discipline and wear jerseys that reflect decency, especially as the nation hosts a major continental event.
In a related update, organizers announced that the quarterfinal kick-off time has been moved from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM due to a tight tournament schedule.
