Arnold Odong has admitted the pressure of representing Uganda on home soil at CHAN 2024, but believes the team is prepared to rise to the challenge.

Ugandan defender Arnold Odong has admitted that he is under the pump ahead of the African Nations Championship scheduled for August 2 to 30.

Uganda will be hosting the event alongside Kenya and Tanzania, and as hosts, Arnold Odong has opened up about their preparations and why they need to make a mark.

Fresh from helping SC Villa clinch the 2023/24 Uganda Premier League title, Arnold Odong now wants to make a mark for Uganda on the continental stage.

The Ugandan, who made 24 appearances for SC Villa, is confident that their camp at the FUFA Technical Centre in Kisasi is preparing the club for what is to come.

The camp is part of the team’s final preparations for the continental tournament, which features only players competing in their domestic leagues.

Arnold Odong admitted that the first week of camp had not been easy, as he explained that the intensity had increased and training had become tougher, but said it was beneficial for the team.

He expressed appreciation for the challenging sessions, noting that they would help the team perform better in upcoming games. Odong added that the coaches strongly believe in hard work, which he said was exactly what was needed to compete.

Under the watchful eye of co-coaches Morley Byekwaso and Fred Muhumuza, Uganda’s locally-based stars have embraced the demands of the residential camp, blending tactical drills with physical conditioning.

“First of all, it’s a very good thing as a team to enter camp because it has brought us all together. The players are working together, bonding, and getting to know each other more,” Arnold Odong said as per CAF Online.

“We’re able to train collectively and the coaches can monitor what each and every player is doing. It’s really helping us grow as a team.”

Arnold Odong represented Uganda in their 2023 AFCON qualification campaign and in friendlies against top African teams like Cameroon and Gambia, experiences he believes have provided valuable insights that are now helping the CHAN squad.

He said that moving with the team during AFCON qualification gave him a lot of experience, adding that he had the opportunity to play alongside top players, learn from them, and gain an understanding of how the national team operates.

He added that the same style of play was now being used for CHAN, so he was bringing in some insight he could share with the squad to help them work better together.

“We’re home and we need to give it our all. We need to work really hard to get out of the group and go far in the tournament,” Odong added.

Uganda have been placed in Group C alongside Algeria, South Africa, Guinea and Niger.
