A Kenyan referee will be among 89 match officials who have been selected to officiate the football tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Kenyan referee Stephen Yiembe will be among 89 match officials who will officiate at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Yiembe, who is an experienced referee in Kenya, will make his debut at the Olympics football tournament, working as an assistant referee, and will be joined by Ismail Mahmood Ali from Sudan, Djibouti’s Ahmed Liban and Ugandan Shamira Nabadda as the only match officials selected from East Africa.

There will be 89 match officials (21 centre referees, 42 assistant referees, 20 video match officials and six support referees) from 45 countries at the Olympics where 16 men’s and 12 women’s teams will be battling for gold in France.

Canada are the women's defending champions, while there will be a new men’s champion after Brazil, who were the two-time men's defending champions, failed to qualify.

It is the second major tournament for Yiembe this year after he made his debut at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast.

The Nakuru-born referee teamed up with compatriot Gilbert Cheruiyot as they officiated the Tunisia-Namibia game at the AFCON 2023.

Yiembe previously officiated the AFCON U23 final between Morocco and Egypt in July last year.

The football tournament at the Olympics will be held from 24 July to 10 August with matches played in Bordeaux, Decines-Charpieu (near Lyon), Marseille, Nantes, Nice and Saint-Etienne besides host city Paris.
