Maina looked positive all match and should even had an assist when Luca Waldschmidt got on the end of his pass but was flagged for offside by VAR.

Harambee Stars prospect Linton Maina played a crucial role in helping FC Koln get out of the relegation places with a 1-0 win over Damsdart in a Bundesliga encounter on Friday night.

Maina looked positive all match and should even have an assist when Luca Waldschmidt got on the end of his pass but was flagged for offside by VAR.

In the first half, chances either side were few and far between. As the game progressed, Koln gained more control over the game, but they generally lacked penetration.

On the other hand, the home team occasionally tried long-range shots but all their attempts were barely on target.

The 17,810 spectators in the sold-out Merck Stadium at the Böllenfalltor saw more of a spectacle after the break.

Tim Skarke fired the first dangerous shot for the hosts when he moved inside, but the ball went just wide of the goal in the 56th minute.

Shortly afterward, Koln finally sailed into the lead. A corner from Luca Waldschmidt, who was substituted in at the break, was headed away by a Darmstadt player into the far post,  - where Davie Selke was in the right place and tapped the ball over the line to put the struggling 1-0 up.

Six minutes later, Waldschmidt supposedly increased the score to 2-0, but Maina, who provided the assist, had previously been offside - and the VAR took the goal back.

A few minutes later, the video assistant switched on again - this time in favor of the FC. Referee Patrick Ittrich decided on a hand penalty. But the pictures showed that Timo Hübers touched the ball with his elbow, but his hands were placed behind his body.

In the final phase, Koln opted to sit back and defend their lead and in the end it turned out to be a brilliant tactical decision.
