Maina produced flashes of creative brilliance but could not help FC Koln avoid defeat to Freiburg.

Harambee Stars prospect Linton Maina featured but could not help FC Koln prevent another Bundesliga defeat against Freiburg, losing 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Maina came on as a 61st minute substitute and did try to create things, even registering an expected assist ratio of 0.37, and also registered one key pass and boasting an 86 percent pass accuracy.

The 24-year-old has registered a goal and an assist in nine Bundesliga appearances this season.

In contrast to previous games, Koln started with two strikers. This was particularly noticeable in the early stages when they were the more active team.

After about a quarter of an hour, the home team got a better grip on the game and had one or two shots.

Koln keeper Marvin Schwäbe parried Vincenzo Grifo's most dangerous goal (29'). Shortly before the break, the relegation battlers  took control of the action again, but shots from Jan Thielmann and Luca Waldschmidt did not pose a threat on goal.

In the second half, the game initially remained at eye level - until Koln  had to play outnumbered.

Jeff Chabot prevented a Freiburg counterattack and fouled Lucas Höler. The defender received his second yellow card of the day and had to leave the pitch after being sent off.

In the 72nd minute, Freiburg struck: Merlin Röhl headed a cross towards the goal. Marvin Schwäbe initially made a strong save, but Michael Gregoritsch found himself in the right place at the right time and took to give Freiburg the lead.

In stoppage time, Freiburg sealed the tie when Gregoritsch crossed to Roland Sallai, who made it 2-0 with a well-placed header.

The result now means Koln are 15th on 10 points and in the playoff place.
