STARS ABROAD Mixed weekend for Harambee Stars players in Zambia

Former Gor Mahia defenders Dennis Ng'ang'a and David 'Calabar' Owino and Jesse Were featured for their respective clubs this weekend, while Ex-Leopards keeper Ian Otieno was unused.

It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Harambee Stars footballers based in Zambia after matchday 16 of the MTN Super League.

Ian Otieno was benched as Zesco United opened up a five-point lead at the top of the MTN Super League table following a thrilling 3-2 victory over winless bottom side Trident on Saturday.

Otieno has been the first choice goalkeeper for the Zambian giants but was benched over the weekend as George Lwandamina opted to rest him for Tosta Nsabata.

Zesco took advantage of a slip-up by Red Arrows at home to Green Eagles to put some daylight between them and the chasing pack.

Enock Sakala Jr gave them the lead against Trident, who equalised from the penalty spot early in the second half via Walaza Tembo.

That was the way it stayed until six minutes from fulltime, when John Chingandu restored the Zesco lead and the unfortunate Kanamuli Kapilimba put the ball into his own net to make it 3-1.

Lassa Kiala gave Trident hope in injury-time, but Zesco  were able to hold on for an important win.

Elsewhere, former Gor Mahia defender David ‘Calabar’ Owino featured for the whole duration of the match as Napsa Stars and Konkola Blades played to a 0-0 draw.

Owino has been a regular feature  for Napsa since joining off season, aiming to return to regular playing time following a season blighted by injury.

Former Tusker and Zesco goalgetter Jesse Were came on as a substitute as Kansanshi Dynamos were beaten 1-0 by FC Muza on Saturday.

FC Muza are in fourth place now as Mwiya Mwiya netted the winner after 30 minutes.

Former Gor Mahia defender Dennis Ng’ang’a could not do much to prevent Zanaco from losing 1-0 to Mutondo Stars on Sunday.

Osmond Chita’s strike in the 63rd minute was enough to pile misery on Nganga and his teammates, who sit 10th in the table.
