Confederation of African Football set May 23 as the deadline to receive bids to host the 2027 AFCON

Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ababu Namwamba has revealed some conditions set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for East African nations to win the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations hosting rights.

Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are hoping to put together a successful bid to host the 36 edition of the prestigious biennial continental showpiece by the Tuesday, May 23 deadline.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, Namwamba revealed that the joint bid requires the countries to confirm the nine stadiums they will use for the tournament.

"We have formed something called EAC Pamoja Bid, which will be a tagline. I have already initiated a conversation with my Uganda and Tanzania counterparts, and we are very much on track, and the background work is ongoing in terms of preparing the joint bid.

"The bid requires each country to have three stadiums and we have already identified the three and we are already making progress in terms of having them ready ahead of the initial assessment visit,” he said.

Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Stadium are the two facilities Kenya will present, and the third venue is rumored to be the unfinished Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret.

The EAC Pamoja Bid will be up against Algeria, Botswana, and Egypt, separately registered to host the event.

Egypt hosted AFCON as recently as 2019, while earlier this year, Algeria hosted the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

It is understood that CAF president Patrice Motsepe encouraged the region to bid to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations during his visit to Kampala last year.

Among the three nations, only Kenya has ever come close to hosting the event when it was awarded the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations but was later stripped of the hosting rights due to delay in preparations.
