Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has said that nurturing young talent from the grassroots is what will propel Kenya to make it to the World Cup in 2030.

Speaking during the awards ceremony of the fourth edition of the Rausha Kipaji Tournament at the Nakuru High School Grounds, Namwamba said it was only through the building from scratch and growing the talent in academies that Kenya would realise the dream of taking Harambee Stars to the global stage.

“For Kenya to be at the high table in football, everybody must work together. We want the national government, county government, FKF, and other relevant stakeholders to join hands and see to it that we make it to the World Cup.

That is what Germany and Brazil do…that is what took Morocco to the semifinal of the World Cup last year and that is what we are going to do,” the CS said.

Namwamba also encourages the football academies to allow youngsters to play and they should not restrict them age-wise. He cited the example of Bukayo Saka who started playing in the Arsenal Academy at the age of six. “Allow them to play from the earliest age possible,” he insisted.

He said the government will rally behind all the football academies to ensure that they build a formidable team ahead of the World Cup.

Namwamba added that going forward, he has instructed FKF to ensure that Harambee and Starlets must have age-based teams at all age levels for FIFA Competitions.

“Starting the next season, Kenya must compete at every age level. We have to enter teams at every age level fully supported by the government. This will ensure the continuity of the sport. FKF must instruct every team playing in the league to have a youth side,” he added.

He announced that the Kenya Academy of Sports has also established a system that will provide a platform for the best talents to be scouted. After the talent has been scouted, Namwamba said the government will take over to cater to the youngsters.

“Every school holiday, the academy will be hosting the national talent camps. We shall bring together all the talents where the youngsters will be trained by the best coaches. The juniors will also be scouted by coaches from all over the world,” he added.

He said the talent scouting process began during the three-day tournament and they have managed to spot 123 players who will be taken into the camp.

He also lauded the football academies that took time to take their teams to participate in the tournament. The showpiece brought over 50 academies from eight counties.

He encouraged the parents to continue supporting their children as they build their talents in the sport.

“I want to congratulate the coaches of those academies and everyone behind the successful running of the academies. I also want to applaud the parents for their unwavering support of their children.
