Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho has courted controversy after getting sent off against Monza, but why did the Roma manager receive his marching orders?

Roma manager Jose Mourinho picked up his first red card of the new season after receiving his marching orders against Monza in the Gialorossi’s dramatic 1-0 Serie A triumph.

Mourinho sent off against Monza

Stephan El Shaarawy’s 90th-minute goal secured a hard-fought win for Mourinho’s men after Monza had spent the entire second half of the match with 10 men, following Danilo D’Ambrosio’s first-half sending-off.

El Shaarawy’s goal was only the beginning of late drama, as Mourinho received a straight red card for a gesture towards the Monza bench during the celebration of the goal.

It will be the second time in two seasons that Mourinho will fall foul of the law against Monza after also getting a suspension in 2022/23 after comments he made the referee of his game against I Brianzoli.

Why Mourinho received his marching orders

The Roma manager’s red card came after he made a crying gesture towards the Monza bench, and head coach Raffaele Palladino, who he has had altercations with in the past.

Speaking after the match, Mourinho explained his point of view after getting sent off against Monza, saying, “I made some gestures, I said nothing offensive. It was because last season some talented people, but lacking in experience, had some nasty words about us.

"Today, the only ones making a show on the touchline and trying to pressure the referee were Monza. I am honest, they are a good team and did not deserve to lose today.”

However, a report from RomaPress says that Mourinho had told Palladino, “You talk a lot and then you cry,” after El Shaarawy’s goal went in and the Monza boss was critical of the amount of time wasted in celebrating the goal.

Thanks to the Red card against Monza, Mourinho will now miss Roma’s crucial trip to his old stomping ground, the San Siro to play Inter next week.
