Ivory Coast’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations hero Sebastien Haller received the most wholesome welcome as he returned to his club Borussia Dortmund following his nation’s cup win.

Haller scored the winning goal as the AFON 2023 hosts staged a second half comeback to beat Nigeria 2-1 and claim their third African crown on Sunday, completing what was a remarkable story.

The Ivorians were on the brink of group stage elimination before they sneaked into the Round of 16 as the last of the four best losers and never looked back, showing remarkable resilience to go all the way to the final and win it.

Exemplifying the Elephants’ never say die attitude was Haller, who was diagnosed with cancer in July 2022 before he overcame it to return to club football, and later fire his nation to continental glory.

Perhaps with this in mind, Dortmund players celebrated their team-mate in style when he returned to club duties on Thursday.

The players gathered at the entrance of the club’s Brackelas training ground as Haller walked in and surprised him with a celebration that included confetti showers while they sang and chanted his name.

Haller, who had been nursing an injury during the early stages of the tournament, was crucial for the Elephants when it mattered most as he also scored the only goal in their 1-0 semi-final victory against DR Congo.

The centre-forward will now hope for some regular playing time with Dortmund having started just four Bundesliga games before he left for the AFCON.

Dortmund take on Wolfsburg on Saturday a match they will hope to win as they push for a Champions League place.
