Shabana coach Sammy Omollo has urged FKF to address high ticket prices after fans boycott KCB match.

Shabana coach Sammy 'Pamzo' Omollo has issued a clarion call to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to step in and address the issue of exorbitant ticket prices set by some teams in the FKF Premier League.

The call for action comes in the wake of a notably poor fan turnout at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, where Shabana faced off against KCB in a virtually empty stadium.

The significant dip in attendance was attributed to the steep ticket prices set by KCB, with VIP tickets costing Ksh 1,000 and regular tickets at Ksh 500, a pricing strategy that has been criticized for alienating the average football fan.

Highlighting the issue, Omollo pointed out that teams with a vast fanbase such as Shabana, AFC Leopards, and Gor Mahia are being unfairly targeted with inflated gate charges.

"Opponents should not exploit fans by hiking the entrance fee just because they are playing with Shabana, AFC Leopards, or Gor Mahia," Omollo told reporters.

The former Kenya international firmly believes that the essence of football lies in its fans, and by setting exorbitant entry fees, clubs are effectively keeping supporters out of the stadiums, stunting the growth of the sport in the process

"Football is all about having fans in the stadium, so when you set the entrance fee too high, you keep fans from the stadium, and that will not lead to the growth of our football," he added.

The situation seems to be a recurring issue, with Gor Mahia's upcoming visit to Mombasa to play against Bandari FC also caught in a similar predicament.

Bandari FC announced a gate charge of Sh500 per person, a significant hike from the usual Sh100, mirroring the pricing controversy that marred Kenya Police FC home game against Gor Mahia on February 3 at Police Sacco.

The Police Sacco Stadium match saw the home team charge an exorbitant entry fee ranging from Sh1,500 for terraces to Sh3,000 for VVIP, leading to a dismal fan turnout as Police clinched a 3-1 victory.
