The Netherlands, the 2019 runners-up and ranked ninth, will now face Spain in the quarterfinals on August 11.

South Africa were eliminated from the FIFA Women’s World Cup following a 2-0 loss to Netherlands in the Round of 16 clash played at Allianz Stadium in Australia on Sunday morning.

Netherlands' opening goal was scored by Jill Roord in the first half while Lineth Beerensteyn doubled their lead in the second stanza as the Lionesses booked a place in the last-eight where they will meet Spain.

Andries Jonker’s charges looked the stronger team in the opening minutes and they deservedly went ahead from their first corner of the match that was met by Lieke Martens with a near post header which was half-cleared off the line.

However, the ball spinned into the air and Jill Roord was first to react and nodded it home from close range to make it 1-0 in the ninth minute.

Netherlands almost doubled their lead on 29 minutes when Esmee Brugts set up Stefanie van der Gragt to shoot on goal, but Kaylin Swart was equal to the task, while another chance eight minutes later saw Dominique Janssen flash an effort just wide of the mark.

South Africa started to push forward and came close to finding an equalizer again in the 38th minute when Thembi Kgatlana met a right-wing cross into the box, but her header shaved the wrong side of the post as they went into the break down 1-0.

Banyana Banyana  sustained the pressure at the start of the second half and nearly managed to find the back of the net in the 58th minute when Hildah Magaia produced a powerful shot but it sailed over the crossbar.

Lieke Martens thought she had  extended Netherland's lead in the 54th minute but she saw her goal disallowed by Video Assistant Referee for an offside.

However, the Lionesses managed to get their second in the 68th minute courtesy of Lineth Beerensteyn's snap shot from the edge of the area which  seemed straight at the South African keeper, however Swart couldn't get her body behind it, 2-0.

South Africa  tried to find their way back into the game and came close to finding the back of the net in the 85th minute when  Thembi Kgatlana  met a cross into the box, but she saw her ten-yard header well-saved by the keeper.

The Banyana Banyana threw players forward in search of goals in the final five minutes but were unable to penetrate the Lionesses defense as the match ended 2-0 in favor of the latter.
