Retired Super Eagles star Ifeanyi Udeze warns Nigerian players not to underestimate Angola.

Former Nigeria international Ifeanyi Udeze has sounded a cautionary note ahead of Nigeria's quarterfinal showdown with Angola at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The encounter, scheduled for Friday, February 2, marks the first meeting between Nigeria's Super Eagles and Angola's Pelancas Negras in tournament history.

Stiff Challenge Awaits Super Eagles

Udeze, a former left-back for the Super Eagles and West Brom, emphasised the challenge posed by Angola, urging caution despite Nigeria's recent successes.

"Angola is not a walkover because they have shown what they can do in this tournament," Udeze remarked during an interview on Brila FM. Drawing from his own experiences facing Angola, he highlighted their resilience and determination whenever they face Nigeria on the pitch.

Nigeria's journey to the quarterfinals saw them secure victories against Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau, along with a draw against Equatorial Guinea in the group stage. In the Round of 16, they defeated Cameroon 2-0 under the guidance of coach Jose Peseiro.

Meanwhile, Angola has maintained an impressive unbeaten streak at the AFCON, securing victories against Mauritania and Burkina Faso and drawing with Algeria in the group stage. In the Round of 16, they delivered a convincing 3-0 win over Namibia, marking their third consecutive victory in AFCON history.

Head-to-Head Battle

The head-to-head record between Angola and Nigeria stands at two wins for each team and five draws, setting the stage for an intriguing battle in the quarterfinals.

A win for Angola would mark a historic milestone, propelling them into the AFCON semi-final for the first time. With both teams eyeing advancement in the tournament, the stage is set for a fiercely contested match as Nigeria seeks to overcome the challenge posed by Angola's Pelancas Negras
