Pepe Bordalas, the coach of Getafe explains why they signed Greenwood on loan from Manchester United.

Getafe boss Jose Bordalas has explained the reason behind his club's controversial decision to sign Mason Greenwood on loan from Manchester United after he was suspended.

The English forward completed a move to the LALIGA side on the transfer deadline, and it came as a shock to many. Bordalas has come out to shed light on the issue.

What has happened?

Greenwood has not played professional football since Manchester United suspended him in January 2022 as a result of online videos and posts showing a lady accusing him of being physically and sexually violent towards her.

The striker was then charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour. However, the charges were dropped in February of this year after key witnesses withdrew.

Despite being in the clear legally and a statement released by the club claiming that Greenwood was innocent of what he was accused of, Manchester United said he would no longer play for them to avoid being a distraction for the club.

What Bordalas said

Suggestions that the Red Devils planned to reinstate the striker were met with a negative reaction from the public.

He was also linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, but the league reportedly chose not to make a move for him because it could lead to a PR problem.

Getafe, however, have now taken this on, leading to unavoidable questions for Bordalas.

"It is a very delicate situation to trivialise this issue. Everyone knows what happened and the appropriate measures were taken; obviously, we can only talk about football,” Bordalas said, per Goal.

"Regarding the other issues, I believe that the people and the relevant authorities did what they had to do, and everyone knows how it ended with a non-conviction sentence.

“Therefore, he is a free person, a footballer of a very high level and who arrives at Getafe with enormous enthusiasm and that we are obviously going to help him so that he recovers back to his best level.

"‘I have already commented what I had to comment. I can only speak on a football level. We all know the potential he has. He is a very young boy, he is still 21 years old and we can help him adapt to a situation.

"It’s a different league but because of the potential he has, I’m sure that if he physically reaches a good level, I’m convinced of him because of how young he is and because we’ve been informed that he obviously wants to recover his professional status and Getafe can help him in that."
