NFF president Ibrahim Gusau believes the Super Eagles will thrive at the AFCON despite losing Wilfred Ndidi before the competition.

In a recent development shaking up the Super Eagles' lineup for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, has provided a reassuring perspective on the team's prospects.

Following the news of Wilfred Ndidi's injury and his subsequent replacement by Alhassan Yusuf, a rising star at Royal Antwerp, Gusau's comments have been a source of calm amidst the storm.

Super Eagles' Strategy: Adjusting Without Ndidi

Gusau, during an exclusive interview on Francis Achi’s YouTube channel, tackled the concerns head-on. His demeanour was one of confidence rather than worry, reflecting the depth and resilience of the Super Eagles squad.

“I don’t have any tension because I know we played a lot of matches without Ndidi and we won a lot of matches without Ndidi. We played a lot of matches with Ndidi and lost unexpectedly so it’s not about Ndidi, it’s about the national team of Nigeria,” he remarked In an interview on Francis Achi’s YouTube channel.

The focus shifted quickly to Yusuf, who has been making waves with his performances at Royal Antwerp. His recent achievements, including a goal against tough opposition in the UEFA Champions League and an assist in a victory against Barcelona, have not gone unnoticed.

Alhassan Yusuf: The Replacement

Gusau’s belief in Yusuf’s ability to step up in the absence of Ndidi is palpable. Highlighting his recent performances, particularly against Barcelona, Gusau sees Yusuf as a player who could potentially replicate the surprise impact Sunday Mba had in AFCON 2013.

“The young boy that was brought in now, Yusuf, is also doing wonderfully well with his team. When they played against Barcelona, you can see the performance he put on in the win against Barcelona in the Champions League,” Gusau stated.

He added, “He’s also a young boy, maybe it’s an opportunity for him to do a miracle. Don’t forget everybody did not have confidence in Mba when we went to the AFCON in 2013 and at the end of the day Mba was part of the players that performed a miracle.”
